I went to New Zealand a couple of weeks back, and of course I took the opportunity to scour the duty free shelves on my return journey. I wasn’t going to make the mistake of picking anything up before hitting Australia, as they tend to see you coming and make up rules that include confiscating Glenlivet Nadurra even when it’s sealed in a duty free bag made just for such purposes.
That’s another story.
Dubai airport is one massive duty free store with planes parked outside. I decided to go looking for something a little bit out of the ordinary, and maybe pick up a couple of bottles – one for tasting, and one for the collection.
I was delighted to find two of the Douglas Laing Premier Barrel 9 year-old Bowmore in a ceramic decanter. There are only 383 of these on the planet and I figured that even if that’s fairly young for a Bowmore – and I wasn’t really that fussed about the pottery container – scarcity has to count for something, and I was curious.
So tonight, Clutch and I have opened one of them, and it’s extraordinarily pale with a coppery green tinge. Reasonable ‘tears’ for a 46% bottle.
NOSE: Smoke, brine, cream, cereal notes, fresh farm air.
PALATE: Sherbert, smoke again, a touch of burnt toast, turkish delight, parma violets, rose
FINISH: Bicarbonate, brine, lemon, pine.
